IEC Commissioner Appointment

The IEC Commissioner appointment process has begun. There are 3 vacancies that need to be filled this year. This is due to the end of the second term of office of Mr. Terry Tselane (Vice-Chairperson) and the end of the first term of office of Judge Thami Makhanya and Rev Bongani Finca. The campaign seeks to bring attention to the appointment process and encourage the public to get involved.

The Panel including Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Commissioner Angie Makwetla from the SA Human Rights Commission and Deputy Chairperson of the Commission of Gender Equality, Tamara Mathebula interviewed 23 candidates on 25 and 26 June 2018. Originally there were 26 candidates but three withdrew from the process.

MVC is happy that the Panel considered a report compiled by MVC in collaboration with the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution which outlines the candidates’ educational background, skills and business interests. In addition, MVC compiled a second report also send to the Panel outlining some concerns we have in a few of the candidates. These concerns range from political affliations and other cases of business dealings we felt the Panel and South Africa should consider.

On 2 June 2018, the Panel released its eight candidates that will be forwarded on to Parliament for further considerations before Parliament recommends the three Commissioners to the President.
