The Electoral Systems portfolio is concerned with ensuring that the political and electoral systems are open, fair, and accountable to the public and that they remain relevant in the changing South African socio-political context.
We aim to achieve the following objectives through advocacy:
- reform of the Electoral Act to allow adult citizens to stand and be elected to the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures as independent candidates;
- research and advocacy on the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill, in particular vis-à-vis the introduction of electronic voting;
- research and popular education on the accountability of the constituency system and
- research and advocacy in favour of a mechanism for objections to political party lists and research and advocacy vis-à-vis recall system.
We hope to improve the accountability, transparency and inclusiveness of elections and politics in South Africa.
