Some may say that Christmas has come early for those advocating for a reform of South Africa’s political party funding system. Yesterday, we gained another unlikely ally, but we are not complaining. We welcome Comrade Jeremy Cronin of the SACP, who has recently added his voice to the call for more regulation and transparency in party political funding in South Africa.

Comrade Cronin echoes some of the key issues raised by MVC in his piece “Corporate capture, money and electoral politics in South Africa: Part One”. Like him, we at MVC call for “tighter regulation of and public transparency in party political funding”, as well as “stringent caps on what corporations and wealthy individuals may contribute” to political parties.
